air compressor settlement
If you have bought an air compressor in the last 8 years, that was marked with Peak horsepower rather actual running horsepower, go to http://www.aircompressorsettlement.com/ for information on a settlement that may entitle you to some free air tools.

As I understood it, if you bought a Campbell Hausfeld or Devilbiss, you can get some small tools, but if you got a Coleman, the only donations are going to Habitat for Humanity.
Air compressor manufacturers have gotten a little creative (misleading) in their descriptions of horsepower. The "peak" horsepower is a combination of the ability to do work of the compressor and a full tank of air, not the actual horsepower of the motor.

When I bought my upright they had two different models on sale... a 5 HP and a 6 1/2 HP. I looked them over carefully to find the differences to see if the 6 1/2 was really worth $100 more. It had a slightly better air cleaner and a larger motor pulley. The motors and all the rest were IDENTICAL! Since I like to add my own automotive air cleaner anyway, I saved the $100.

That's a good charity and I'm glad they'll get the tools. The Coleman Powermate I have is a direct drive. The noise is unbearable and the heat transfers all over the unit. I had to replace the thumb-sized regulator after about a year. I'm shopping around for a belt-drive.

as long as we're on the subject, it's a good idea to pipe the air intake to another room, away from dust and sandblasting operations in the shop.

I've got a commercial upright in the shop, but my portable is a Campbell Hausfeld and is eligable.
Thanks, John, for the heads up
