I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.

I didn't know figs were grown outside of California... and even then I thought that was a secondary crop.. Most figs I thought came from the middle east..
See, learn something new everyday. I loves fresh fig newtons.. and almost anything else with a fig in em.. they are really nice. too bad Em is allergic to strawberries.. strawberry/fig preserve sounds scrumptious...

Rudi - this recipe doesnt include strawberries. I thought the figs would be farther along than they are, but when i got to the farm yesterday they were not quite ripe. THis recipe is figs , sugar (preferably Dixie Crystal), and strawberry jello powder. If I can get a hold of some, ill have to send some your way! unless there would be traces of strawberry in the powder?

Rudi,
Way down here in south Louisiana, almost every yard had a fig tree when I was sprouting up. Not used in the landscape of new subdivisions nowadays, though. Most people don't garden today like they did in my younger days.
Spiveyman,
My mom did just that when we had bucket loads of figs - made different flavors by using jello powder. Made the best kind of peanut butter sandwiches there was!
If anyone is interested, LSU AgCenter is releasing three new varieties of figs. There was a breeding program years back and then the breeder retired. These varieties hung around a long time on research stations (including mine) and then they were looked at again with fresh eyes. Three are getting released. We are in the process of increasing supplies. Check out the LSU AgCenter website for more info. I guarantee there will be three new fig trees in my back yard!

Joey - Good deal! Somebody else knows how to live!!! 1st crop died off from the april freezes we had, and second crop is on its way. If we continue with no water, i fear the few gallons I will take in this year will drop off and die . Sure hope i can make some more preserves this year .
