replacing points, condenser and rotor
I want to replace the points, condenser and rotor in my 184 as well as the distributor cap. Should the rotor just pull out of the distributer or is there a trick? It feels like there is a good resistance to just pulling out and I don't want to break anything. I could have sworn that I had it off there at one time to check points but, darn if I can remember anything that needed done to pull it off. Thanks

If it's been on there a while it may be stuck pretty good but it just pulls off.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Re: replacing points, condenser and rotor
Got the points and condenser in. Turned her over to TDC on #1, set distributer to #1 firing order. She fires right up and I can throttle up to max but, as soon as I kick the PTO on to run the deck, it's like someone is choking her. I adjusted to where it won't stall but, what a rukus and it will not smooth out again. I have now tried to adjust the throttle/ governor linkage to the carb, the fast and slow idle speeds- same story. Could I have a kaput governor? Any suggestions? greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: replacing points, condenser and rotor
I guess I should mention the thing was running fine this summer (running rough at startup but real good once warmed up). I was mowing Friday and it started to run rough while mowing along. I pulled it up into the shop and started looking things over (I was thinking fouled plug or something). I pulled the distributor cap and saw some pretty rough contacts too. I replaced the plugs points and condenser thinking these could all be the problem. I wish I had the knowledge of some of you on here with these cubs. I have never had these issues with any of my Diesels.

Diesel,
Did you ever get her running right? Just wondering?

Don't know if you solved the problem. Next step would be to time the engine - static or dynamic.Got the points and condenser in. Turned her over to TDC on #1, set distributer to #1 firing order. She fires right up. it will not smooth out again. I have now tried to adjust the throttle/ governor linkage to the carb, the fast and slow idle speeds- same story. Could I have a kaput governor? I have an excuse. CRS.
