Check out these numbers, Look Out Kroil Lovers
I don't know if this belongs here, but I figured more people would see this and the mods can always move it!
I found this on one of the Model T Ford forums I and others on this forum frequent. I have never seen this here, but if it has and I missed it sorry for the double post.
Here it is:
Machinist's Workshop Magazine (March/April or May/June, 2007) actually tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts. They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.
Penetrating oil .......... Average load
None ..................... 516 pounds
WD-40 .................... 238 pounds
PB Blaster ............... 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ............ 127 pounds
Kano Kroil ............... 106 pounds
ATF-Acetone mix........... 53 pounds
The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone.
Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this test.
The article went on to say,"Our local machinist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use it with equally good results."
So might as well give it a try... can't hurt!
I haven't tried this, but I have some things that need a little help parting ways so I am bound to try it soon.

I have never used Kroil, I have used PB Blaster. I liked the old non-aerosol Liquid Wrench better. Now I know what I will try next. Makes sense to me, Thanks

With the test info coming from a Model T forum, I am surprised to see that Gibbs penetrating oil was omitted. That seems to be a favorite among the Model T, Model A and antique hit-or-miss engine crowd.

I still like my "Open&Shut" by Drummond America. That 50-50 concoction does sound interesting though. Thats two powerful agants.

Re: Check out these numbers, Look Out Kroil Lovers
Probably significantly cheaper than Kroil, but in a spray can you can get it exactly where you need it (well metered valve). I swear by the stuff. Never broken a single bolt since I started using it.
I just hit every thread and the bearings on the new disc harrow with Kroil before I took it out of the truck.
There is one from CRC(?) that freezes that is pretty good too.
Be careful how you use and store that mix if you try it. But if someone has luck with it let us know.

Acetone will dissolve many plastics. Most spray bottles, and sprayers, are plastic. Don't store the mix in an area, where the mess would be a problem. Ed

That sounds like a good mixture to use on rusted front axle tube extensions. Be careful, ladies, it will strip the polish off your fingernails.

I am gonna give it a try. Need to find the right dispenser. Acetone is almost explosive.
Will need a stainless steel spray bottle. Don't know where to get one.

Acetone is very volatile and those vapors are flammable. It is also a powerful solvent, be careful of what may be evaporating along with the acetone that you may not want to breathe. Beware of lit cigarettes, static discharges, pilot lights, electric motors, sparks of any kind in the area. With this in mind, mix up only as much as you need at a time in a glass container. Dispense with an eyedropper or spoon, depending on what needs penetrating, I'm not so keen on spraying something so prone to explosion.

Acetone dissolves many plastics, hence the good advice on the glass container. You would not want to return to the garage the next day to find a melted quart bottle and shop full of fumes. Whatever you do don't turn on a light switch in a room full of vapors until it is ventilated.

Michael - you can buy gallon cans of acetone at home supply stores in the paint department. I know Lowe's carries it and I'm sure Menards does as well. About $17 - $18 a gallon. You can probably find quart containers at paint stores as well.
