aranging new pistons in NOS block.

Postby dennnis79 » Sun Dec 19, 2004 6:18 pm

I'm gettting ready to start assembly on the NOS block. I was first going to check the end gap on the rings. After looking at the block and pistons, I'm confused on the the markings.

The cylinders are lettered (from front to back) C C B C and the pistons are marked (in order they came out of the box) C B C D.

What is confusing me is the D on the one piston. I could have opened the box from the wrong end (if that order matters), but the D is still the oddball. Or does it make any difference at all?

There is one odd thing about the markings on the block. Cylinder 1 is marked with an upside down C compared to the marks on the other 3 cylinders. I'm wondering if the D piston should go in the cylinder with the upside down C.

Any thoughts?

The D has to go into a C somewhere. I would probably decide to read the bottom side up C as a partially struck D and put it in that hole.

That’s what I was thinking to, but the first C is definitely a C, and not a mis-strike of a D. But I guess the striker could have been lazy or perhaps lost the D. I’ll put the D in #1.

Thanks.

Don't worry aobut the order the pistons were in the box, that's just how somwone grabbed them and dropped them in. As Jim said, the upside down C is probably in incomplete D. The letters are actually sizes where the bored holes and the pistons were closely measured for fitting.

Not to be harsh but that is why they sell inner and outer Micrometers.
The agony of expense will die long before the joy dies of a well put together smooth operating engine.

I have inners and outers, but I have trouble measuring to the ten-thousandths.

After thinking about it, I'm going to go with John and Jim's suggestions.
