Gm 1 wire Alt on super A
HELP! i got my super a running great and the Alternator i had on it went bad, so i replaced with a GM 1 wire i had on hand that i know is good. the one that was on it had the old Delco square plug and now i dont know how to wire up the 1 wire, i talked to the guy at the autoparts store when i was getting some more wire and other stuff and he said i just needed to run a wire from the Alt to the positive side of the battery....is this right? and if so how does the coil get power? right now it is negative ground with the positive lead going to the starter and it has a coil with an internal resistor......any imput would be great as i am trying to get my turnip bed planted

Ol'Red,
Do a quick "Google" search for Bob Melvilles Farmall Wiring Diagrams...you'll find just what you're lookin' for.
I'll give you the Reader's Digest version though...run a No. 8 or No. 10 wire from the alternator to one side of the ammeter, and then from the opposite side of the ammeter to the battery. Run a small No. 12 or No. 14 wire from the post of the ammeter down to the ignition switch and then on to the coil. Lighting circuit comes off the ammeter as well, through the in dash fuse holder and on to the lights.

nope, after i had called you, i put both wires on the post on the alt and hit the starter and i got a spark at the - terminal on the battery. so i disconnected the alt to see if it would run for a few seconds just on the battery and nothing, so i charged the battery alittle and now it will turn over, it is just not getting fire to be continued......

Re: Gm 1 wire Alt on super A
I wired up a one wire alternator on my 1940 Farmall A . Just going off memory the wire from the alternator ( 10 Ga, ) goes to the amp gauge, From the amp gauge run a 10ga. wire to the lug on the starter. That's how the battery gets charged. Also off the outgoing side of the amp gauge attach a 12 ga. wire to the kill switch. From the kill switch run a wire to a .....well I forget what it's called but it's white ceramic with two terminals on it.It'll come to me later but they are available at NAPA and it's a Mopar part. From there run a wire to the coil. Like I said earlier this is from memory and these days it's not very good.
