Smoking Now

Postby JimT » Thu Sep 02, 2010 4:49 pm

I put the 14 hp Kohler in the 109. I had to removed the balancer gears as the bottom gear was broken. After I put the engine back together it is smoking now. It did not smoke prior to taking the engine apart to remove the gears. Here is a sequence of what I did. I took the oil pan off, took the rod cap off, pushed the piston up to the top of the cylinder (I did not take the piston out of the block), slide the crankshaft over far enough to get the top balancer gear out, and then put everything back together. The engine runs good still with no knocks, but it is smoking now. No bad, but it was not smoke before the work. One other thing I did was to put new gaskets on the breather. I am wondering if the reed valve may have gotten out of place a little and now the oil is being drawn into the engine from this area. Is this possible or should I look in another direction?

Any help will be appreciated.

I would check to ensure the reed valve is installed correctly and also ensure the small drain hole in the plate the reed fits against is at the bottom. I allows any oil to drain back into the crankcase and it is easy to install it upside down.

Thanks Paul. When work gets out of the way  I will pull the breather cover and check it out.
