Re: a and super a
Super A started in 1947. 1942 would have been an A. They did not have hydraulics available, and I am not sure, but I do not think there was a place to mount the touch control pump on the engine.

David - if you go to www.tractordata.com you can find a lot of information on different models including information such as engine displacement, HP, etc.

Re: a and super a
The SAs that I have taken down had pop up pistons, the As I have taken down had flat tops. But the SAs could have been changed. The pistons will work as both are 113s unless you have a very late SA , it would have had a 123 engine

Re: a and super a
For all practical purposes, the A and Super A engines are identical, with one major exception. There is no place to install the hydraulic pump. So unless you want to rig up some homemade substitute, an A engine isn't a suitable replacement for a Super A engine.

From the factory the Super A would have had flat tops. Most got upgraded with Fire Crater's or some other brand of pop up piston when they went in for overhaul.
Question for Jim Becker: Did any of the very last A's have the hole for the TC pump, but blocked off with a plate like the Cub's did?

Some evidence (which I have not seen first hand) seems to suggest that a few went out with the hole for the hydraulic pump. These were evidently random tractors where a sample or pilot casting got used. I haven't seen anything to indicate that the last xxx tractor were produced with Super A blocks. I have definitely seen straight A blocks with higher serial numbers than the tractors reported to have a place for the pump.
Since I haven't seen the hybrid tractors myself, I can't dismiss the idea that they simply have replacement blocks.
