Guys
the RH (1st & rev ) shifting fork broke on my 52
I did get the piece out w/o falling down in or jamming in the gears
can it be replaced with out splitting the tractor?
is that replaced with a used one or new?
Howard

Yes, the rails will slide toward the rear, be sure to catch the spring loaded ball as it comes out.
You might weld your old part and be fine or call Ralph's Cubs for a good replacement.

Re: Shifting fork Replacement
You can get the a new fork from TM or a Case dealer. Unfortunately the tractor needs to be split to replace the fork and you may consider replacing bearings in the transmission and the PTO pilot bushing while you have it apart.

Edit: You do not need to split the tractor

Re: Shifting fork Replacement
You do not have to split the tractor to slide the rails out of the way and change a shifting fork. Like Yogie said, the rails can be slid back. Just be sure to put your finger over the hole to keep the poppet ball from shooting out.

Re: Shifting fork Replacement
coppersmythe,
Based on the above warnings, you now know how your poppet ball got lost. It likely is long gone and hiding in the corner of the PO shop or it could be in the bottom of your tranny. If it is in the bottom of the tranny it will not cause any problems. The spring may still be in the poppet hole and all you will need to buy is the ball.

Thanks guys
Yeh now that you mention it when taking the tranny apart on my other 52 I remember the ball popping out
Yogie
It does look weldable , and i may fire up the heli- arc tomorrow
and advise my wife not to use an "iron hand " when shifting next time
(she was driving it when it broke |: sshhhh)
probly work on it tommorrow
I'll report back on how I make out

Re: Shifting fork Replacement
Howard - I make it a habit to keep my mouth closed when working underneath a cub. So far, I have not swallowed a poppet ball but there is always a first time.

Re: Shifting fork Replacement
I've fished more then one poppet ball out of the bottom of my tranny. A long thin wooden dowel with a dime sized magnet jbwelded to the dowel, works for getting down in there and picking up the poppet ball in the gear oil

Good work Howard, I've opened several and found them welded. It'll be fine now...
