Refresh me on Super M details....?
Can someone refresh me on the 'detail differences' of a Super M over an M. Also was a Super M ever painted from IH with white paint on the grill and down the sides of the hood, below the drip line.
IHC made a quality machine and was leader of the pack.Let's keep them running,

Re: Refresh me on Super M details....?
The super M had disc brakes, later supers had the battery under the seat as opposed to under the fuel tank. I believe the grille was different as well but it is a very subtle difference.
There were some differences between the early and late super M's which confuses the issue even more and I also believe some very late M's also had disc brakes.

I believe the later Super M had live hydraulics driven off a pump between the distributor and the engine, not sure about the early ones.

The battery relocation that Bigdog mentioned was needed to accomodate the live hydraulics. The 2 variants of the Super M are often refered to as "Stage 1" and "Stage 2". The last few Ms had the Super M style disk brakes.

another subtle difference, some late M's and the Super's have the ignition switch mounted in the box along with the light switch, ammeter and fuse.

Mr. E's '53 Louisville built Super M is a Stage 2. My dad bought it new from the local dealer. It has the battery box under the seat but it has the belly pump rather than live hydraulics as both were available. As Dusti stated it also has the switch box full. Dad painted it several years ago and I put the decals on and put everything back together. With a new wiring harness it was really tough jamming all that stuff in the box and getting the front bolted back on.

THe Super M was also geared a little faster. I can't remember now if it was all 5 or just 3rd and 4th.
The grille thing I want to say was more of a change from the Super M to the Super MTA but again I may have my details off.

I believe this pump would fit some older Farmalls. The Coopersville Farm Museum (Coopersville, Michigan) has an M and I think an H with this change. It used the original pump for oil storage. I know it caught my attention real quick. I can't find any pictures of their tractors on their web site and what they display rotates due to space so they may not always be seen. Does this setup provide for two way hyd or just live? Vern

Re: Refresh me on Super M details....?
Very common mod to make on later M's. Late M's have the timing gear cover and heavier timing gears that accomodate the pump. Provides live hydraulics only..

Re: Refresh me on Super M details....?
The 2 way was controlled by a separate valve that could be added even to the older systems.

Dad had a seperate valve body on a 51 M to make it two way. As I recall the pump was run more or less continually and the valve body selected up, down or return to the pump. Used mostly for pulling something that was not painted red. Vern

Saw a SMTA yesterday with a power steering pump connected right on the steering shaft just below the steering wheel. Is that standard or gerry rigged?
