Cheap and Dirty Boom Lift Gets a Work Out.
Today I gave my new boom lift a workout cleaning up a bunch of logs left from the 3 large pine trees that I took out awhile back. When I built it, it was just an exercise to see if an idea I had would work. I did a little experimenting with it in the shop which I documented in the first post. Today I actually put it to work.
I finally got all the pine trees limbed out and just had to get rid of the trunks. I cut them into lengths between 2 & 4 feet long and used the boom lift to pick them up and stack them out of the way. The thing worked pretty good. Sure saved a lot of backbreaking work. I am real pleased with the results, considering the limits of the Cub.

Re: Cheap and Dirty Boom Lift Gets a Work Out.
Good looking boom there! If you move the chain about 6 to 10 inches toward the end of the boom I believe it would lift a lil more weight too. It would give you just a bit more mechanical advantage. Good job on it!

That's a terrifically well engineered lift. It has a lot of unique simplicity in design, quick installation, and leverage features that deserve a patent.

Re: Cheap and Dirty Boom Lift Gets a Work Out.
If you have a 12 volt system you could add a couple pulleys and a winch. Then you would have a nice little jammer. Then you could drag the logs from a ways away, and then lift them on a pile or trailer.
If you look at the back end of this homemade tractor you can see it"s jammer. It is made from a car or light truck rear end. Here of course, it is used to lift the manure loader, not a boom.

Re: Cheap and Dirty Boom Lift Gets a Work Out.
Thanks for all the nice comments, guys. One other nice feature is, due to its light weight, when not it use it's easy to get it out of your way, hanging on the wall, not taking up any shop floor space ( same with the tree grubber).
