Finally finished Mama's yard art project. She had wanted a larger windmill for the back yard and the "store bought" 8 footer was getting shopworn. We bought the "head" assembly about two years ago and I finally got around to completing the tower yesterday. Used 2x2x1/8" and 1x1x1/8" angle iron for construction and poured 4 support columns with imbedded "J" bolts to tie it down. Brush painted it with Rustoleum Hammered Silver--gives a good "galvanized" look. The head assy. consisted of the vane and fan and is sturdily built with square tubing, a 1" arbor for the fan and sealed bearings. With luck, the only maintenance will be paint touch up. I measured the fan, compared it to the fan on the 8 footer and upsized the tower by approx 1/3 to maintain scale. No close ups as my stick welding abilities are far from professional

Very nice job Bill, your wife should enjoy her wind mill for many years. Looks like a pretty neat weather station, wind direction, rain gauge and all.

Good job, Bill. With it being out there in the yard, you should get some movement if any wind is blowing at all.
There's an old standard height (if there is such a thing) windmill for sale not too far away from. I had given thought to checking it out. Would look nice set up in the back yard.
Thanks for sharing pictures/story. As long as "mama" is happy, that's all that matters!!

Thanks guys. Would have liked a standard sized mill, but don't think the neighbors would have been too keen on the idea, AND, being the highest point around, it would have needed considerable grounding
