One less groundhog on the mountaintop this afternoon. This one was at the house and has been evading me for close to a year. He showed his face at the wrong place and the wrong time.

We need more info. What did you use to eradicate this vermin? I like to use a .222 to turn them into fertilizer.

Actually, I used a neighborhood friendly Gamo 2000 fps scoped pellet rifle. Neighbors were oblivious. First shot immobilized him and two more shots at close range finished the job. Tough little bugger.

This is close, Bob. I guess mine is 1200 fps, not 2000. Very close to a conventional .22 velocity.

Re: Don-1, Whistle Pigs-0
Hmmmmmm.... we have a whole whack of groundhogs here. They love the nooks, crannies, crevasses and voids under the road bed. They don't bother us much and they tend to get my father-in-law's attention. He still talks to them even though his Alzheimer's has progressed significantly. As long as they help Dad I don't think I will bother taking the 22 to them. But in time it may come to that.
I also have a pellet gun with a scope but those are reserved for the Crows and the Ravens.... God I can't stand them -- always raiding my cherries, pear and apple trees. They touch my peaches and they is history I kind of liked the Destroyer pellets .. interesting.

That is all a whistle pig is Robert, a giant grass and vegetable eating rat that digs huge holes in fields.

Re: Don-1, Whistle Pigs-0
When we lived in our old house we had a ground hog destroying everything in sight. We had transplanted a dozen oak trees that had grown wild in the yard and they were doing great until the big rodent started to feast on them. I knew he was living under the wood pile behind the garage, but never could catch him out. One day he was nibbling on one of our last young oak trees so I went in and got the rifle. When I came out he scrambled for his hole and my daughter, who was about 5 or 6 at the time, asked what I was doing. I told her to stay on the porch until I got back. As I headed for the back of the garage I felt I was being followed. When I looked back Mel was right on my heals. I told her to get back on the porch and kept going. Just as I got there he had come out of his hole and was standing on his hind legs with his back to me. One shot and he was mine. Never had a problem with them at that house after that. Now that we are in the new house, with the three dogs, I have left the rifle in the house. The dogs just leave a present by the porch now and then.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: Don-1, Whistle Pigs-0
Keep up the good work Don. "Live" trap and 22 shorts don't do bad either. Thursday it was 3 Friday 2. Mama and four young. Spent the last two months taking out coons,16, and now for the woodchucks. If I called them whistle pigs I don't think half the people around here would know what I was talking about. Hedgehog maybe. Bait for woodchuck is apples, coons is marshmallows. Gunfire in this neighborhood is not unusual so I don't worry if the neighbors do hear. Three of the coons were walking across the yard and one was up a tree. Low brass 6's out of the old 12 worked real nice. Vern

Don I put an end to the one hanging out at my burn pile,"one shot one kill" 22 rifle steel sights about 125-150' Really ,after I lit him up he did a funny looking walk to the pile, to be never seen again.
