Chuck, I'm not sure I understand your question. Is the ball on the end of the cutter bar slipping out of the straps? If so, here is a page from the manual, you may be missing the spring.Image

My parts catalog is not convenient at the moment. The images are small on my screen in the online version and I may have listed the wrong part. In the diagram, #11 is Cap, Knife Head Rear with part number M 2 664 or ME 652 depending on the date of your mower. This part, or one of those near it, has an ear that projects to hold the cutter bar from falling too low when raised for transport. Look on your mower in that area for a place where a piece has broken off.

Bus Driver...I was thinking the same thing...but I couldn't find an appropriate photo to show it.
My mower is missing the "ear" and doesn't stay up either.

Chuck, After Busdriver's reply, I went out and looked at mine. At the pittman end of the bar, there is a piece of metal that is at the end of the bar. It runs the same direction as the hold downs. At the outer end of it , it is bent up at 90* for about 3/4". One side of the two straps holding the ball has a projection that extends out from the center of the cup. This projection hits the bent up lip on the bar. I would bet that is what is missing. Hope that makes sense.

Bob

Edit: Here is the parts page that I think was being referenced by Busdriver, as he said #11 doesn't show up too well: Image

Been there! Done that! Something might well be broken. Take a look at the rear most part of the sicklebar stationary assembly at the base. There's a casting held on by 2 bolts. The most inward part of this piece -- which holds in the bar as it goes back n' forth -- has a vertical component. This vertical component (which was missing on my tractor for 20 years) holds the bar from falling down. This is Winfield's "ear."

Columbia Tractor in Claverack, NY, had the part for me. Your zipcode suggests you might be within their range. Talk to Mike in Parts. He knows.

Yet, for 20 some years I roped the pitman bar up to hold everything in place when the assembly went vertical for traveling.

While I have not tried it, a piece of dry wood roughly round in shape about 1" diameter and about 12" long could be held between two of the knives and reasonably tight against one of the guards on the side of the guard nearer the tractor then held with a short bungee cord around the back of the cutter bar assembly. This would be placed while the bar is down in working position and then when the bar is raised for transport, the wood will limit the travel of the cutter assembly and not damage the knives. Removal before use would of course be necessary.

Thanks for all the help so far.So how do you determine date mower was made? are their dates or codes stamped into the casting?

ok as i mentioned i had two mowers so i went out and looked a the 2nd and the winfield ear is missing on that one but the one hooked to the 1950 does not have the plate or the ear. Well I ordered them all and a few other parts from Townline Equipment in Plainfield NH which I have dealt with before on some parts. They are very helpful and quick with delivery and everything was in stock. I want to thank everybody fo their help. I don"t post alot but I read the post and so many times I go aha that how thats done, thats where it goes, thanks again
