5/16 plow bolts <<FOUND!>> and an old baler question
Anybody know where I can get some plow bolts, 5/16x1", need 12, grade 5 I believe, thanks
Use is in an old NH baler, from the 60's, in the chamber, there are 2 angle irons that the plunger rides on, and these bolts attach that angle iron to the bottom of the chamber.
Also, the plunger has 4 strips of wood, 2 on top and 2 on bottom. I would imagine I should use a hard wood like oak and make my own. My neighbor bought 2 from New Holland and he said it was $107 for 2.

Re: 5/16 plow bolts and an old baler question
Bob, There are a variety of head styles for the plow bolts. If you have one out, it would helpful to see a picture. Any farm store, McMaster-Carr, Fastenal, or your Case/IH dealer would carry plow bolts, depending on your specific style.

White oak will work well for the wear-strips. Soak them in used motor oil for a few days before installing.
Best,

Bob, are you sure about the 5/16 diameter? I don't see anything smaller that 3/8". 7/16 is a common size.

On our old New Holland 77T those wear strips were made from a fiber composite rather than wood.

How long for the wear strips? Snowmobile 'hyfax' may work perfect for that.... I may have some around.

Thanks Larry, but the friend who owns this baler wouldn't want any space-age materials, I'm having a hard enough time convincing him to use oak, because he's looking at the 2 NH replacements and they're some other wood that's probably not oak, but I think for functionality and longevity nothing's going to be better than oak, plus it's in plentiful supply. And like Mike said, soak 'em in oil sounds like great idea.

The friend who owns this baler has been driving around searching high and low. I told him they'll definetely be on the internet (which he does not do). Now I'm having my doubts too. I did see some 5/16 x 3/4 but no 1".

Bob, try A1 hardware, in Somerset. (rt 138, Indian Spring plaza) He tends to have almost anything you want. I recall seeing plow bolts there, but don't know the size. Ed
