Worked to Death.
Hi all, had a great day yesterday with the sickle bar mower for about 4 hours. WORKED PERFECT thanks to Dale Shaw and others. got the hanger bracket from Dale and with new bolts she was working great. Worked her to Death,so to speak. After I finished mowing headed to the barn to put her away and on the way there within 100' from the barn heard a soft "clunk". Got in the barn, shut her down and noticed a little trickle of antifreeze dripping on the floor. The bracket that held the fan broke and the fan went into the radiator. Got to looking it over and it had been welded [half welded]. Some people are just Not qualified to weld Cast iron.......... My question is if it is possible th changt the timing cover in chassis or better to pull the hood and ftont-end. First problem in 10 years, been a good old workhorse. Thanks in advance for any answers. Bill wlm cub

Re: Worked to Death.
I am assuming you will have the radiator off for repair anyway so it should be easy enough to get to everything else. If not, then I'd pull the front off. It will save you some headaches in the long run. It is much easier to get to everything else with that out of the way.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: Worked to Death.
FYI, the reason, more than likely, that your timing cover had been welded, was because a previous owner probably tried tightening and/or loosening the nut on the end of the shaft. Do not use that method.
Here is a good how-to by Barnyard that shows the correct process for tightening and loosening the fan assembly:

Good luck with your repair.

Re: Worked to Death.
To replace the cover you have to remove the crank pulley. It would be really difficult to do that with the front casting on.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Hi Dale, How you been? Thanks and will be in touch later. The next few weeks will be pretty busy for me. hope to start work on her then. Thanks for the hanger bracket, that really took care of the viberation and she cuts great now even with the used cutter blade. Bill wlm cub

Re: Worked to Death.
I am scheduled for complete left hip replacement on Nov. 28. If you can't make it up before that, let me know, and I will put a good one in the bed of my truck before I leave for surgery. will make it easy for you to grab. I will put a good front pulley with it just in case. You can always bring it back any time if it is not needed, but will be hard to find if I am laid up and you need it.
