Throw another regulator at it?
Went through and started all the tractors last Saturday.
Super A isn't charging... AGAIN.
Grounded the field on the generator, got full charge. Another regulator bites it...
So do I throw another regulator on or convert to 12V...

Re: Throw another regulator at it?
Depends upon which regulator you have. Many of the older ones can be adjusted. The newer ones have the adjustment wheel staked in place, which cannot be moved. I have an old time rebuilder that can do wonders with a generator and regulator. I take both to his shop, so he can tweak the regulator to charge just the right amount of volts. Now, if he says that he cannot do anything with the VR, then you are back to your question of gen vs alternator.

Re: Throw another regulator at it?
Where'd you get the regulator? I understand the USA made ones (that TM used to carry) are much better quality.
I guess you don't have to look at my sig. line very hard to see what my vote would be....

I took a chance on a cheap ebay regulator a couple years ago.
They screwed up and sent two. I've had both of them fail on me now.

I've had good service from the ones I get from NAPA, made in USA
I've never had any luck with the ones from China, or anything else from there

Re: Throw another regulator at it?
All my work tractors have been converted to 12 volt alternators. Only had one alternator of unknown age fail. The alternator was over 15 years old. Spent in the $50- range to replace the 3 wire alternator with a single wire alternator.
Topic has been discussed many times. My opinion, I would convert to a 12 volt single wire alternator.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Matt:
Get a good regulator and stop the pain. Those off-shore ones aren't so hot. I get only genuine AC Delco replacement parts -- seems to work. The higher end NAPA ones - Echlin I think would be a quality unit as well.

I just got one. The private label package says CarQuest. The regulator itself has no brand marking but is marked made in USA.

Thanks for posting this. The 12 volt VR on our IH 424 died. Ordered from Rock Auto and got one made by Standard, marked MADE IN USA. Hopefully we'll get 45 years out of it like the old one!

Me too. Like I said the 424 regulator still had factory paint from 1967 on it.
Super A's were 6 volt originally.
