How do you know re brakes

I have a 1958 Cub loboy and I believe the brake bands are shot. Aside from the obvious (doesn't stop), is there any way to determine condition of the brake bands without removing the finals?

Check the thickness of the lining material.

Sometimes the lining is still in useable condition and they are just soaked with grease and oil which can be burned off, which can make them functional again.

With a 1958 model, you should have the toggle style brakes, have you tried making any adjustments on the rod and clevis from the brake band to the pedal yet?

As Bill said, you have to remove the finals.



To remove the finals you are going to have to jack up the tractor which means you have to take certain safety precautions. Suggest you read this article - How To Safely Disassemble A Culti-Vision Tractor. The article uses a Super A but the same procedures apply to the Cub. Safety first, remember to use wheel chocks as well which is a practice I use along with wedges.

Get 2 large cans of brake cleaner. 1 for each side. With the straw attached, spray the band as thoroughly as possible from the front and the back. Wear eye protection. If they are oil soaked, this should help and give you a better idea if you need to remove them and burn them out.

This would work really well on a regular cub, not so good on tonystoy's loboy.

All loboys have toggle style brakes.

Open either page or the HTML file

Could be a brake drum has come loose from the shaft, could be needing adjusted as mentioned, could be something else. Look closely at how the lever is working when a helper pushes the pedal. Do you feel some resistance? It's not easy to look up into the final and see what's hapening on a loboy. If it's really greasy/oily that may be the problem and you might want to consider some seal replacement. Probably better to pull it off and give it a good look and clean up. You'll know what's wrong and what to fix.
