Just picked up this 63 cub, factory paint, serial 222269 and you can see its a round hood, even has firestones on the front, my red square nose 63 is serial 222707, just curious what serial # the square nose kicked in, the serial #s are only 438 apart on these two

Re: Picked Up a 63
Tim, the square noses started at 222501, which probably means that there was a SN skip in there.

The square nose is all factory/unmolested, the round one is also but is more weathered, I think I will have to keep them as a set

Re: Picked Up a 63
Tim,
Very nice tractors. You've stumbled onto something interesting regarding the 1963 Cubs.
1963 Production started with serial number 221383, and ended with 223452, for an assumed total of 2,069 tractors.
However, as mentioned above, somewhere in there they changed the style, assumed at 222501
Using that info, and assuming they may have skipped a few serial numbers to get exactly to 222501, here is an interesting breakdown
Round nose 1963 Cubs - Serial number 221383 to 2224?? - Approximately 1017 +/- tractors
Square nose 1963 Cubs - Serial number 222501 to 223452 - 951 tractors.
So, there may be about a 100-tractor gap in the original estimate. I'd be interested to know if anyone has any of the serial numbers in between, 222400 and 222501.
Just some cool little thought. As I stated when I made up the serial number listing, it was based solely on starting and ending serial numbers, but we all know that numbers have been skipped like this along the line.
Thanks,
Bill

No number tag on my 63 round nose, probably stolen at one time knowing the area it came from.

I always thought that the longer steering shaft came out with the square nose but it looks like it started a little sooner

Bill, as I have been wading through loads and loads of numbers lately, I had found some discrepancies with the Production Reports from IH and the SN's that are listed out for each year. The final report for 1963 and 1964 had the greatest disparity of any of the rest. So, I had to dig a bit deeper to try and find out what might me happening...
The final report for the year (IH's year was Nov to Nov), Nov 1963 lists 1701 F-Cubs built. When you look at the first SN of Nov 62 to the last of Oct 63, the total adds up to 1899. Obviously a disparity there by 198 tractors. So if we then take the SN from the first square nose at 222501 and subtract it from 223042 (last of Oct 63), it gives us 541, which if we then take that number from the total produced during the year (Nov to Nov), it gives us 1160. If you add 1160 to 221143 (first of Nov 62), you end up with 222303, which I believe should be the last round nose Cub.
I've done the same for 1964, assuming that there was a SN skip before 224401, and if my math is correct, 224286 would be the last 6v Cub.
Now my head hurts!!
