I really hate surprises, Really, Really.
When the weather was warm enough and I felt like working I have been repairing the local Lions Club cub (try saying that fast 3 times). I have a good bit of it done, and put the valves in today, but the first set of springs I picked up to instal were 2 different lengths.
My first thought was that is normal for Rotocaps, but the engine does not have Rotocaps. When I checked the rest of the springs they were all the same length as the longer one within about 1/16 inch or so. No problem, I have some springs from an engine I scrapped several years ago. So I got a spare spring off the shelf, and surprise, surprise. The one on the left is one of my originals.
Compressing them by hand, the ones in the cub are noticeably weaker than my original. I suspect I now know why the valves and seats had quite a bit of serious pitting, especially the exhaust valves. When I called Fliegs Equipment, local IH dealer, I did get a pleasant surprise, the springs were only $5.40 each, about half what I expected. decided to go that rout rather than used.

That engine must of been overheated at one time.Cylinder walls,pistons,crankshaft and crankshaft bearings show signs of overheating?

No sign of overheating, it has had a number of different care takers, etc. over the years. It is not obvious in the picture, but the springs are not made from as thick a coils as the original I have. Spring fatigue, and/or too many years in the compressed/open position. I know the spring seat pressures are not all that much on a C60 but heat and time will take a toll on about anything.

About 15 acres to mow for the Lions Park and Fairgrounds. The Cub was bought used in the early 1950's and was in use until around 1980 when it was retired in favor of a Ford 3200 (??? 3something00) with a three point finish mower. The Cub saw less and less use to the point of not being ran at all the last couple years. Since the president of the Lions Club (that would be me by the way ) hates to see a Cub neglected, came up with a plan to get it back to running shape for use as a backup to the Ford. Which is turning out to be a very fortuitous plan since the Ford has taken to chugging five gallons cans of gas and leaking hydraulic fluid and oil like the Exon Valdez and may not be ready for spring mowing. No argument Smoky, however, as I stated earlier, the metal of the springs is of different thicknesses, I measured them, and the ones in this cub are .0835, and the one from an original is .0925. I do not think they or fatigue shrunk from heat.

they must have been high performance valve springs to go with the racing cam you never know what you'll find when you open up an engine.

Our local Lions Club provides facilities for many private and public uses, frequently at a minimal or no cost. They host the county fair, and let their grounds be used for both practice and games for PeeWee football, little league softball, etc., in addition to local estate auctions that need a large indoor facility, reunions, wedding receptions. etc. All of the things they do charge for are done at a very low cost to the user, and I do not mind helping them out.Scrivet wrote:.......About 15 acres to mow for the Lions Park and Fairgrounds......;....
