Rear Axle drive gear lubricant
Removed the rear wheels to change the spacing configuration. Luckily, all I have to do is swap sides and I get 48" centers. While I have the wheels off I went ahead and removed one housing pan for the Rear Axle drive gear. That's a fun mess, so I now I can see the bottom half of the rear axle drive gear. But to the point, am I just not seeing how to add the lubricant (Hy-Tran?) back into the housing pan? I'm assuming it is not through the transmission fill plug given that when I replaced that, a white transmission fluid came out, and the stuff spilling out of the housing pan was a deep brown. Am I just not seeing the fill plug for bathing the Rear Axle drive gear? On page 7-9 of GSS-1411 service manual it states that I should "fill the housings to the correct level with Hy-Tran fluid, but it doesn't show how. Thanks in advance.

Re: Rear Axle drive gear lubricant
There's a plug there that is removed with a ratchet(no socket). Each one is located between the implement mounting holes on each final. Bout an inch above the pans

Re: Rear Axle drive gear lubricant
I would not fill it above the level of the gasket on the pan, otherwise the gasket will wick and seep oil. As long as there is enough oil for the gear to pick it up and carry it around it should be fine.

I would fill it to the factory recommended level. Boss Hog has reported upper bearing failures after using the short fill method.

Well, I stand corrected. I wonder if using Hytran vs gear oil would have any impact.

This is just an indication of moisture mixing with the old fluid you removed.

If the rim of the oil pan is deformed you can get leaking, but if straightened and with the use of a gasket and sealer you should have no leaks.

David has done more of these than me, but I have had good luck by using either method---to the hole or short filling

Hy-Tran would be for the hydraulics. Use what the manual recommends, SAE-90W gear oil (think I use a multi-blend from TSC, 85W-90 or similar). Always consult the Owner's Manual (top of page, to the right, in blue letters: Manuals) for answers to questions pertaining to your Cub.
Hope this helps.

Either Hytran or gear oil can be used.

After about 1960 the manuals say to use HyTran in the transmission, right angle drive and finals. It will take up some water.

Sorry, was referring to the earlier Owner's Manual. I stand corrected...

Here is the Hytran story. It was a revolutionary product at the time and a great success story for Viscosity Oil. http://hytranman.com/since1963.php

Not to worry Stanton. Gear oil is OK too. But I am a fan of HyTran and you will probably find gear oil in one or two of my Cubs. The most important thing is to keep the level correct and not have any water in the mix. That will eventually cause problems with bearings. That chart was the only thing I could find on short notice. Some people will say gear oil will quiet a noisy tranny, but it will still be noisy to me
Also, one gallon will fill both the tranny and TC.

Re: Rear Axle drive gear lubricant
I must have read that story 20 times and it still impresses me immensely. I think Hy-Tran is the best hydraulic fluid out there with Perma-Tran being a close second. In Ellie I use Perma-Tran because of the inter-connectivity issues with Ray's Massey. There rest of my Cubs will have Hy-Tran/Hy-Tran Ultra in them.
A good point is made in regards to some of the later manuals that call for Hy-Tran instead of SAE90wt Gear Lube. IH made the changes and I am assuming because I don't have one of the later Cubs, that the seal technology improved immensely over the earlier Cubs. Personally if I put Hy-Tran into Ellie or Granny I have a feeling it would be leaking out like crazy ... simply because of the early technology. I may be off base .. but that is what I think. I also think that the Gear Lube does quieten the gear noise a lot. Again that is an opinion.
I like how Ellie sounds when she is in gear, very quiet, no whining at all.
