My 63 is a 2224** serial number, red with the squared off front end..... the numbers can be off a little right around the time they officially switch over.

Re: 63 cub
I personally don't think the numbers are "off a little". If your serial numbers ends in something in the high 90's it could be a "preproduction build". IH always started their serial numbers with 501. There would always be a few test machines in the 490, 491, 499, 500 range that usually never made it to the public. With the Cub being not much of a real change they may have shipped these units. Or more likely it could have gotten a new style hood and grill to look more like the new model tractors from an owner, or from the dealer that had it set on the lot a little to long while everybody picked the newer ones. Or the hood could have gotten damaged and the only replacements available were the newer square hood. LOTS of possibilities who's to say any are right or wrong.joemcc wrote:My 63 is a 2224** serial number, red with the squared off front end..... the numbers can be off a little right around the time they officially switch over.

I think mine is 222483 or something along those lines, I assume it was made during the changeover period, just interesting I think....I'm the 3rd owner, have been told it's rare to see this style front end in a 63, but not unheard of, some I'm assuming there were a few partially assembled cubs that got the squared nose before the changeover, just like you said....

Re: 63 cub
From what I've seen, the serial number based changes in the parts books have been pretty reliable. Cases that appear otherwise rarely have any documentation that dates back to the time of the event. On the other hand, mixed parts from another tractor are pretty common on 40, 50 or 60 year old tractors. I've seen a lot of Cubs with hood/tanks that came from another tractor.
In the case of a tractor built near a documented change, I would go with the odds. I would assume that it is just like the other tractor with mix-n-match parts and that it happened some time after it left the factory.

Re: 63 cub
Looking in the database and if my math is correct; from Jan 63 till the change over, there were 1,117 cubs made (assuming they went to 222500 as the last round nose). From the change over in mid August till the last cub made in Dec, (again I am assuming it is one less than the first of Jan 64), they would have made 951 square nose Cubs.

Welcome to the Forum!
Would you mind double checking that SN? From the information I have, something is a tad bit off...
I'd love to have any other numbers off your tractor that you would be willing to provide. Click the link in my signature line for the amount of information that has already been provided by the members here for all of us to look at.

Re: 63 cub
I stand corrected, you all certainly know your stuff...... original operators manuel has sn# 222461J written in beside the buyers name..... rubbed down the plate and they had the numbers reversed and it is sn# 222641J ..... makes more sense now, especially because the original owners said the front end was original......thanks for making me look closer, I apologize for not checking sooner

No apologies needed Joe, that's all part of what the forum is about. Others may have learned from this.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.
