1963 Farmall Cub Red Square Nose
Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum, looking for tips setting up my cub. I have a sn# 2224** red square nose, 6volt with a 6' belly mower. It runs great and has no issues other than cracking tires. I don't have a fast hitch or any hydraulic set up in the rear, but do want to use it to disc my garden. I know the plow and cultivators will hook up in the center but would like to set it up to pull a disc, just not sure about the set-up, not having hydraulics or 3 point hitch like on the 8N I used to have. Suggestions are appreciated as I currently only have the mower, a plow, partial set of cultivators and wagon.... still need to purchase or modify a disc. Thanks!

Re: 1963 Farmall Cub Red Square Nose
To clarify.... my cub does have hydraulic lift, just no arm in the back to lift rear implements... also curious as to median prices on 8.3 - 24 tires as I need to replace one or both in the near future. I live north of Charlotte, NC so if anyone has a line on getting replacement tires or even finding good used tires locally, let me know. Thanks again.

G'day to you and congrats on the '63. Suggest you read the International Cub Lo-Boy Operator's Manual 8-1-63. The rear rockshaft and the rod are available either from one of our forum sponsors - JP Tractor Salvage or from one of our members - you can post a want ad in the Wanted Cub Items subforum if you wish.
There are lots of resources available for our members and I would suggest you take some time, find a comfy chair, a cup of coffee and spend some time perusing the links:
As far as tires - check out these two - Tucker Tire and Miller Tire - you can find them on
I found that my local tire shop surprisingly has US made Carlisle's and Titan tires for both the front and I think the rear if I understood them properly.

If you click on the Site Rules, Regulations, & Important Information, it will point you to the Welcome Wagon wherein you will find links to many useful sites and topics. Manuals, top of page. Check out the 23A disc harrow. You don't need hydraulics to operate it.joemcc wrote: would like to set it up to pull a disc, just not sure about the set-up, not having hydraulics.
Check with your local tire dealers. They will be able to get the tires and tubes. Price, Unknown. Tire prices have gone up considerable since I purchased rear tires for my Cub.joemcc wrote: also curious as to median prices on 8.3 - 24 tires as I need to replace one or both in the near future.
Used tires. Usually cheaper in the long run to purchase new tires.
I have an excuse. CRS.

to what Eugene said. The 23A disc harrow is adjustable to set the angle (i.e. aggressiveness) of the discs. When transporting to/from the field, set the discs to run parallel with the tractor. My Cub (w/o fasthitch) doesn't lift the 23A to transport, but will leave minor cuts along the way.

Re: 1963 Farmall Cub Red Square Nose
Thanks for the information.... I have the original manual for the cub(its not a low boy, just a regular cub) but I am enjoying looking through the many resources on the site! Always wanted a cub, this one was my Dad's, even though we used old Fords growing up. I think I know where a 23A might be, just wasn't sure about getting to the field without making a mess of my yard, but I'll check it out. The attachments for the cub seem a bit more complicated than just the standard 3 point hitch, so it will take me awhile to figure out what I have and what I need. I like the fact that people seem to make a ton of their own implements for these things and will be trying to fabricate some of my own. I appreciate the help along the way and thanks again!

Re: 1963 Farmall Cub Red Square Nose
You can often find cheaper tire prices by shopping online but remember that you have to pay $$$ to SHIP the tires to you. Shipping usually kills any price advantage of buying online when it comes to the big bulky rear tires.
Used tires is a fickle market. You're depending on being able to find a particular size of tire, in the right condition, at the right price, not too far away, right when you need them. A lot has to come together perfectly for that to happen. If you can wait, you can eventually find an acceptable deal on usable used tires within driving distance, but if you need them RIGHT NOW you've got to be exceedingly lucky.

Re: 1963 Farmall Cub Red Square Nose
Left rear tire is leaking out through the side wall crack, it holds air for a day or two at a time so I can still use the tractor as it is....found a slightly larger tire on the same size 7" rim (mine tire is 8.3-24 and this one is 9.5 -24) for $80 about 70miles from here, may go get it in place of spending $175-200 on a new tire right now...

Great looking machine, you got a heck of a deal! I'll post up some pictures of mine soon.
My 63 has been a mower for most of its life, just now wanting to branch out to plowing and working up the garden. It is all original, needs a few things like the rear light and the seat re-covered, but it is in pretty good shape. It has a new clutch, just changed all the fluids and greased it up.... cranks easy every time. I imagine it will be easy to get carried away with this tractor.... so many possibilities and accessories... just going to have to take my time collecting what I need I guess....the rockshaft arm will be at the top of the list though!

WELCOME! There are quite a few of us here in NC...I am in Chapel Hill...and we are here if you have any questions. A couple guys are fairly close to you.
If you are around May 31-June 1, there is a Cubfest in Randolph, VA, at Boss Hogs, one of the most experienced Cub guys around. He often has lots of parts, and may have your rear rockshaft. You learn a lot at these gatherings, and generally if you bring your cub, there will be a bunch of folks willing to help you with your projects.
Look forward to seeing some photos and perhaps seeing you at the VA Cubfest!

Nice Cub! WOW!!! Never seen a 3160 mower deck from a number series Lo Boy on a Cub. That took some fancy fabrication! Yea, you're missing a few things to be able to plow. Looks like you're missing the rear rockshaft and lift rod, rear drawbar and drawbar brackets.
