George Willer put a post up several years ago showing how he set up a tractor to be sandblasted, complete with photos.
I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Re: Sand Blasting vs. Wire Brush Grinder
I used an angle grinder with a cupped or straight brush, sometimes a drill with a small brush for tight spots. I always shoot bare metal with rattle-can primer (wipe with alcohol) the same day. It is slow and tedious, yeller Cubs are harder for some reason.
For big parts, separate from tractor, like fenders and wheels, either sandblast or electrolysis is a good way to go. I have a good sandblast guy and have taken loads to him, done the next day for a reasonable price. My rule of priming before I go to sleep can be a pain under such circumstances, but still a rule.
Not a fan of sandblasting anything with a seal or a bearing. Pieces are fine.

Washing soda works well in the electrolysis tank, I would use that before the fake TSP.

Absolutely! Dump a box of it in a 55 gallon drum and it will work great. All you are doing is making the water conductive and sodium carbonate ( NOT bicarbonate) or washing soda is a great electrolyte. The more conductive the water, the more current gets to the parts, the more current, the faster it works. It helps to have a beefy power supply.
I find that it loosens paint. Some spots stay a little stubborn.
With wire wheels, you will come in the house like a prickly pear cactus with broken wires stuck everywhere. once the clothes get into the wash, most of the wires will find your wife's most sensitive clothing if you know what I mean. Welding chaps are a good idea. I had to have a wire removed from one of my toes. Didn't feel it working its way in. The dust gets everywhere. lead paint dust is very dangerous, particularity for children.

Wow - you guys are all amazing.
Is this the correct Washing Soda - http://www.walmart.com/ip/Arm-Hammer-Super-Washing-Soda-Detergent-Booster-Household-Cleaner-55-oz/19407690 I'm questioning because it says detergent booster.
Lastly - please remind me again how you remove the black residue and control flash rust when removing the part. I've seen in this post rub with paint thinner - what do you all like best?

Ken:
It is amazing the power of advertising.
This is the same stuff in basically the same box that has been around for decades. Course now everyone knows that it has to be New and Improved or in this case a detergent booster to compete with Oxi-Clean ....
As I have mentioned before many times over the years, TSP and TSP-Free or the DAP TSP that you bought will prevent flash rust. I don't know why or understand the science behind it, all I know is that it does do that. In my presentation on my Electrolysis rig, I show part of the blade that I was running through the tank. I finished all of those pieces but had a massive coronary before I could prime them. After a sextuple by-pass and the resulting convalescent period of over 6 months, it was July/August before I got around to priming. There was NO flash rust on any of the parts and they sat in my unheated shop all winter.
I use lacquer thinner to prep before I prime and then I use either red oxide primer or if I am doing a lot - dura build primer. If you use washing soda, then do as Larry says and prime before you call it a day or it will flash rust.
Hope that helps.

Re: Sand Blasting vs. Wire Brush Grinder
Lowe's may still carry REAL TSP. there are other chemicals that make the water carry electrical current, but the general consensus is that tsp is best as it affords some rust resistance till parts can be painted.

Fake TSP is washing soda, at least any brand I have seen.

Re: Sand Blasting vs. Wire Brush Grinder
When this was discussed several years ago, some states "outlawed" the sale of real TSP.
