Hey everybody. I haven't checked in here for a while, but I need a little guidance with my Woods mower. The blades spin, but it won't cut. The belt seems ok. Next, I checked for broken overrunning clutch keys because that's the way it was acting. Both keys are intact. After intently studying the parts diagram, I took the overrunning clutch apart (uncharted territory for me) expecting to find a stripped ratchet and drive hex. Both seem to be ok. The compression spring, however, is in 2 pieces. Could this broken $4 part be causing the mower not to cut? What does the compression spring do? Thanks!

Re: Woods 42 C4 help
When you turn the pulley by hand and hold the blade does it slip.
Are blades on upside down.
If i am not mistaken that spring forces the two pieces of clutch together.

Thanks Mike. Yes, the pulley slips. I know the blades aren't upside down because when I installed new blades last year, I installed them upside down. Of course, I realized it immediately. Doh!

Make sure parts 5 and 7 are not rounded off or broken.

Re: Woods 42 C4 help
The large circumference spiral compression spring is key. It keeps the ratcheting collar down on the pulley ratchet base. If the collar does not mate with the base, the pulley will simple spin without turning the spindle. The part can be obtained from Woods.

Re: Woods 42 C4 help
Also if the ratchet and springs, dogs , etc are good ,when you turn the pulley back it should make loud crisp snaps each time it lifts and drops the dogs! ---at least mine do! thanks; sonny

Re: Woods 42 C4 help
Thanks y'all. Sounds like a new compression spring will put me back in business. I appreciate the help.
