Can the governor shaft be removed from the governor gear assy. in a nondestructive manner. I have 2 governors: one with a bad shaft and a gear with a good area for the oil seal and one just the opposite.
Goal: One good governor.

Re: Governor Disassembly
Well, the two became one. I thought WWBD (What Would Boss Do) and with a press and minor heat (propane torch) the shafts came loose (press fit). Reassembly was straightforward, however you have to watch how deep you seat the shaft or when you pin the weight carrier on there will not be enough clearance for the shaft to turn. (Don't ask how I know ) Also a thanks to Glen for the push to get me started.

Pix, would be awesome as I have 3 governors on my bench right now.....Going to combine the best parts to make one solid one....along with some new seals of course.

Re: Governor Disassembly--DONE
For you Rudi:
First, the shaft: Note, the shaft should be the same diameter from the left side to the shoulder.
Next, the two gear assemblies-one good-one pitted.
Removal: I used an old 3/8" deep well socket as a press collar, put some tension on the press and added heat and it popped loose.
Installation involved use of a 1/2" deep well socket as a press collar so it would fit on the shoulder of the shaft.
I didn't go into more disassembly as there is already a good powerpoint presentation on governor overhaul.
There may be some trial and error to get the proper depth of the shaft in the gear so the shaft will turn properly and not bind.

Bill:
That is excellent, a good adjunct to Joss's demonstration back in '04. I am so glad that Carl did that up.
Pics do tell a hundred stories - these will help make it easier for those of us who are visual learners. Thanks
