Hey everyone I have a 48 cub and it has a crack in the engine block in the corner beside the steering gear box,it apears to have been brazed before, can it be successfully repaired or should I start looking for a replacement block? I am new to this blog and hope it is a helpful and friendly community.
thanks

Re: crack in engine block
Welcome to the best forum on the web!
That is a common repair and weakness. Many are out there that have been repaired and engine braces have been designed to support the "ear" that has been repaired and prevent failure in good blocks. Is it leaking oil? About the only thing I would not do is rebuild an engine with a broken ear. Many have been running them for years with no problem.

Re: crack in engine block
I also have a welded ear on my 53. I've worked that Cub hard and it's holding up well. I know some have been brazed, but mine is welded. I don't have any extra bracing, but I probably should. It wouldn't bother me a bit to do an in frame overhaul on that engine, but if I had to pull the engine, I would replace the block.

Ron:
G'day to you and welcome. I have no problem with installing ear supports on a block with a cracked ear. My '48, Ellie-Mae has a crack .. weeping just a tiny drop of oil every now and then. Currently installing the ear supports as I redo the front tire.
There are lots of resources available here for our members. Suggest taking a bit of time and following the links below:

Ron, This is one of the friendliest forums you will find. We don't mind answering any question (no such thing as a dumb question). You can help yourself some by doing a search, and also navigating around the how to and manuals and different threads.

I'll second that!!! In fact, come play with your cub "neighbours" at Boss' VA Cubfest May 31- June 1. You can ask your questions in person, help out with various projects learning the fun, "hands-on" way, and generally have lots of fun and meet lots of friendly, knowledgeable folks!!
Check it out, welcome and good luck!!
