My father stopped by today - He agrees with you - As do I and also with Jim Becker - who stated - It will get dented again. I've also considered changing to the late model pan. All-in-all - I probably put the dent in there as a teenager - I'm leaning towards leaving it for the memories. The pan wasn't leaking - if it does leak someday I'll change it then.
Thanks to all for the input.

Since you're going for originality, you can't get anymore original than that.

However, every time you look at that Cub once you are done with it, you'll ask yourself, "why didn't I fix that". Every time you show someone your work on the Cub, they'll wonder the same thing.
All the wear and tear throughout the rest of the Cub has history too but you are repairing that. That is my 2 cents for what it's worth.

Ken,
I'm with Ricky on this. If you are going to all the time, trouble, and effort to strip, prime, paint, repair, refurbish and rejuvenate your Cub --- do it all. My thoughts, worth what you paid for them.

Ricky and Bill - You both make very valid points. Now I'm gonna have to fix it or replace it. My gut tells me I've got to at least try and fix it. If it fails, I can always replace it before reassembly.
Awesome thought provoking comments from everyone - much appreciated.

Make the decision before you mate the engine and torque tube. Those rear 3 bolts are a PITA to get to.

Re: Dent in Oil Pan!
I seem to be in the minority but I'd keep it. I'd also put a small decal/sign/stick on letters by it with my name on it and what year was my best guess for making it (I'm thinking you may know exactly but don't want to fess up to Dad even after all these years). Solves the wondering about why you didn't fix it, keeps it original, preserves the memories, and I bet Dad never threw money at it "unnecessarily", especially since that dent's been there quite some time.PVF1799 wrote:............ Ken:
I am going to make this more difficult for you. There are lots of pristine restored Cubs out there with every bolt in perfect shape, paint perfect, decals perfect .. yada, yada, yada .. but not many out there with personality, connections and best of all little guilty or funny memories. Personally, I would just check that pan to make sure it is solid and leave it alone Your Dad is right -- it will probably happen again in all likelihood and then it will just irritate you because it got dented into your nice new paint. If you leave it alone, well the memories are there and if you decide to follow
which sounds like a plan to me -- then you gots a Cub with character.
Not knocking other restorations, some of our members restored Cubs that I have seen in person are gorgeous and have their own character. Yours will just have a family history full of character is all

Re: Dent in Oil Pan!
Ken - I would leave that dent right where it is, and be prepared with a good tale about how and when it got there. This would be an instance where you would not want to let the "facts" get in the way of a good story.
I restored an old wooden canoe, complete with new canvas over the hull. There was a .38 cal bullet hole through the hull just above the water line and a little behind the front seat. It was the result of a porkupine hunt years ago to get the critter that was chewing up the paddle handles. I left the hole in the wood, as the new canvas covered it and made it water tight. On the inside, beside the hole, I placed a little plastic plaque that said "Great Porkupine Hunt August 1959". I have had great fun telling folks the story, which, by the way, bears little resemblance to what actually happened. Al D

Re: Dent in Oil Pan!
I don't see how these answers are "wishy washy", they're all either fix it or keep it. In the fix it crowd are the two choices of try to repair it or replace it. That all seems pretty cut and dried to me.Rob in NH wrote:all you guys are doing is confusing ken with all these wishy washy answers, your making it look like new ken, fix the pan please.you'll be sorry if you don't.
I've already stated to keep it. If you go that route and then turn out to "be sorry that you didn't" fix it as Rob in NH put it, how hard is it to acquire, paint, and change an oil pan (with the right tools for the three back bolts)?
It really comes down to will it bug you more with the dent there or gone?
If you really can't make up your mind get a new pan and change back and forth every oil change.

Hey thanks everybody for the inspiring thread of this post. I've made up my mind, but given that this thread has taken a bit of a testy tone - I'll update ya'll when the Cub is done.
Thanks again to all - All input is gladly, thankfully accepted and appreciated.
