When I pulled the '53 apart the center of the clutch disk was pressed right off the splines into the center of the flywheel. Bent into the shape of a bowl.
I had the tractor split at the bell housing for a new main seal. Then I split it at the transmission for a new input shaft seal. It went back together easy enough and worked fine for quite a while, just driving it around and dragging some brush. If I'd screwed it up I would think that I'd have noticed noise or problems sooner...
Did the clutch disk failure cause it to bend, or did the bent clutch disk cause the failure?
If you've got a few minutes can you take a gander at especially the last 2 minutes or so of my video, and give me your thoughts?

Re: Clutch Disk Bent into Bowl Shape?
Disk installed backwards. Long end/side of the center, splined, portion of the clutch disk goes to the rear of the tractor.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Except disk wasn't installed backwards... You can see in the video, the short side is the bottom of the bowl, and that was facing forward.

Re: Clutch Disk Bent into Bowl Shape?
When assembling after one or the other of the two splits, the splines of the transmission shaft did not properly engage the splines of the clutch disk. The shaft was forced in, bending the disk while bolting the tractor back together. The splines finally engaged, allowing the clutch to function more or less normally until it shed the lining. If your 2 splits (clutch then transmission) were done back to back, the damage was probably done on the first split then the splines correctly engaged on the second.

Thanks Jim. I was afraid it was something I did. You're probably 100% right. Funny thing is it didn't go together hard on the bell housing split. It was probably the transmission split that did it. That took a lot of wiggling and jiggling.
Lamb & Webster's is only 3 miles from the home farm. Dad is going to see if they've got the parts. If so, I'll have them this weekend.

Re: Clutch Disk Bent into Bowl Shape?
My first thoughts were the same as Eugene's, but after noticing the shiny spot on the short end of the spline looking like it had been rubbing, and no sign of rubbing on the long side I tend to agree with Jim. When putting one back together I usually put the pto in gear and rock it back and forth as I slide it in to make sure the splines engage properly. You might want to check for rough spots or burrs on the transmission shaft, especially on the end of the splines.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
you are part of the problem!!!
