1st/Rev gear replacement..Pics
Hi Guys..Thought I would share my progress so far..OH MY..this is what your gear should NOT look like...It is hidden under the shifting fork..Explains how I missed it when I unlocked the transmission..Thought the shifting forks just got out of sequence...NOW I will do a more thorough inspection of this gear in the future..I have a feeling it is the WEAK link...since it is being reproduced..Believe it or not the trans was quiet and smooth in 2nd gear..Obviously I will be replacing all seals and gaskets..All the other gears look OK..Think I will do the Brake bands as well ...since i'm in there...

Fantastic job so far, and what a great shop you have!! Looks like you will be back in business very soon.
Oh, one thing I missed while I recently replaced the left brake band on my cub and the differential seal in the transmission housing, was the o-ring that lies behind the differential seal retainer...item #7 in this link:

No real disaster, but I THOUGHT I had replaced all the seals and gaskets "while I had it apart"!! Not leaking, so I guess I am OK! Good luck with yours.

Wonder what would cause extensive damage like that? Any input from previous owner? Could it be mower related?
Nice looking shop. I am just up the road from you in Catonsville, and not an expert, but I have done a lot of work on my 48 Cub, so if you ever need help with something, just call or send me a pm.

Hey Bill...appreciate the offer..and if I can help..I'de be glad to as well...would be fun to work with another enthusiast...
As for the damage?? I am wondering as well..The tractor was set up with a Woods 59 mower..What is your thought on that?? and I suspect someone had been in this transmission before at some point...There was an extra ball in one of the shifter rod plungers, and instead of a gasket under the main shaft front seal housing, there was silicone gasket maker..??????...Tom

Tom,
Maybe someone tried to put the pto (with mower attached) into gear without depressing the clutch. Hard to imagine it doing that kind of damage though.

I was thinking that too..BUT the gears look absolutely undamaged..I cleaned them and examined them with much scrutiny..I even went back and looked at the pics I took before dis-assembly to be sure the gears were oriented correctly ..Beveled sides facing the correct way...I'm stumped on what caused the damage..the only thing left is TOTAL abuse of the transmission (1st to Rev) by the previous owner....

I just think with that gear being torn up as it is that the gears that come in contact with it have to have had some damage, maybe they will be fine. But may have a crack too

Re: 1st/Rev gear replacement..Pics
Which side was the extra poppet ball in?
If it was the right side, the extra ball in there would prevent the shifter from sliding all the way forward (1st), which may explain the damage from the gears not fully engaging.

That gear, besides being all busted up, looks severely worn as well. Makes me wonder which happened first, the breaking of teeth or the wear. ...or if something fell in at exactly the wrong place at the exact right time?? In any event, with new bearings and a new gear it'll be good to go. ...and how do you keep that great looking shop so tidy?? My shop usually looks like a bomb just went off!

It's also possible the case had water in it at some point, cold winter some one tried to move the tractor with a frozen transmission and popped the clutch a few times trying to free it. End result is breaking the teeth off, or causing enough damage then to lead to this.
