Using Bill & Rick’s advice, I corrected the timing issue and the Cub idles fine now. However, I have a new problem. When I depress the clutch the idle speed noticeably drops. Any suggestions as to what can be causing this? Any help will, once again, be appreciated!
Thank you,
Phil

Re: Idle speed drops
That is normal for the older cubs. You are putting pressure on the crankshaft it is most likely moving to the front some and the friction on the bearing all combine to slow down the engine

Re: Idle speed drops
And to add what Boss Hog said. Suppose to do that, short answer. So everything is fine.
Cause, the throwout bearing is a solid carbon type puck. When clutch engaged, pressure plate fingers rub the puck, slowing down engine rpms.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: Idle speed drops
Always wondered why it was easier to start in neutral, and why the engine bogged down with the clutch in.....Thanks Boss and Eugene....and farmerphil for posting the question....

Re: Idle speed drops
Although normal, it does remind me that the throwout bearing should be greased annually, using the cheap grease that will separate. Proper greasing could reduce the effect, or at least limit it to only what is normal.

It is recommended to start these Cubs in neutral for exactly that reason, and less wear and tear on the driveline and starter.

On the late models you cranked them with the clutch pedal in, as they had a safety switch. The older cubs were cranked in neutral for safety reasons
