Thread repair
One of the four holes that hold the cultivators to the lower steering housing is stripped on my '61 140. What would be the best repair for this, helicol or keenserts?

Re: Thread repair
Never mind! I just had one of those DA moments, just go to the next bolt size and be done with it! Sorry for wasting your time.

Re: Thread repair
I'd use a helicoil and replace all 4 bolts with setscrews.

Re: Thread repair
Could you elaborate on the set screw Jim? How does it differ from a standard bolt? What did it originally have?

Re: Thread repair
I'm not Jim, however, this is my take on your question. A set screw has a cupped end and does not "mushroom" near as easily as a bolt. A mushroomed bolt can be difficult to remove because of the larger end resulting from the mushrooming. In addition the cupped end actually holds better because that is what it is designed to do.

Re: Thread repair
Exactly what Bill said. The threads were probably taken out by removing a bolt with a mushroomed end. IH was inconsistent on use of set screws on the Cub, but I think they called it pretty universally on the A through 140 tractors.
Check the bolt description under reference 5 on this page:

(You may have to hit "print assembly" to see it.)

Re: Thread repair
OK, after a second look, I am afraid that going to a 3/4" bolt will not leave enough metal so I think that the heli coil option will be the way to go. Thanks for the set screw screw option, it really makes a lot of sense. From the look of the bars this tractor has always had bolts.

Re: Thread repair
Just for the sake of knowledge, what size were the bolts, set screws, out of the factory. Mine are 5/8", I bought a used part and those were 1/2".

5/8"-11 X 1 1/4"
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I'm not Jim, however, I use jam nuts. Just seems to make sense to me to use them.

Agree. At least some implement manuals explicitly mention the jam nut.

I have seen quite a few with the lock nuts and a square head, however our 140 that was bought new did not have lock nuts or square heads I believe that would be correct

Re: Thread repair
Does anyone know of a good source for these special setscrews/bolts? I just looked on McMaster Carr and didn't see anything like them. You'd think they would be a standard peice of hardware.
