Recheck your plug wire positions in the distributer cap. Set the engine so #1 is on compression at TDC. Verify where the rotor is pointing, correct if needed, make sure the plug wires are in sequence 1-3-4-2 from the rotor position.

I didn't remove the plug wires from the distributor, Jim, so that shouldn't be the issue and I can't imagine I have the distributor 180 degrees out of whack. As for the rotor, you're talking the rotor visible directly under the distributor cap?

I think I'll yank the governor again and make certain what I'm taking for a dimple is actually a timing mark. Thanks for your help.

Looking at the distributor cap installed on the tractor from the drivers seat...#1 should be at 12 o'clock, #3 next in clockwise rotation, then #4 and #2?

Yes. 1-3-4-2. If everything is timed right, #1 should be at about 12:30 or so. Go clockwise around the AM dial. (old radio reference). #2 should be back next to the engine block, #4 should be at the bottom, #3 should be outside.

Sounds dumb, but check the other ends of the wire to make sure they are tight on the tops of the plugs.

How do you like my restored coal stove? I've spent most of the weekend working on getting this finished up. In frustration, this afternoon I pulled the hood to chase down the plug wiring and guess what, it was wrong. Since I got the tractor back from the local guru, I've never had more than one wire disconnected at a time so he sent it back that way. How is it possible that it ran at all? I've never had more than one wire disconnected from the distributor, ever.

The plugs were gapped too tight so I opened them up to .024 from approximately .020. Going to oil the fan hub next. Battery is dead and it looks like rain.
