Hi Jim, there are no spare guard holes in the bar, and each guard is bolted down with 2 bolts. JoeB may be correct it might be a mismatch as the guards center at two and a half inches, and the knife blades center at three inches.

Re: cub 22 mower
What you are saying doesn't add up. I asked if your guards are triples. That is, does the front of each "guard" have 3 pointy ends? I am guessing so, or at least some number other than 1.
Your knife has 18 sections. At 3 inches per section, it is 3x18 or 54 inches long (4-1/2 feet). You have 26 guards, or at least you have 26 pointy front ends of guards. Take the 26 and add 1 because we didn't count the outer shoe. 54/27 makes each guard 2 inches like you said originally, not 2-1/2 like you said later.
Back to the guard bolts, 2 bolts in each guard. Are you saying there are 26x2 or 52 guard bolts? Or does each guard have multiple pointy ends and 2 bolts each, for some smaller total of guard bolts?

Re: cub 22 mower
Hi Jim,
Sorry for the confusion. I went out this morning and checked again. The overall length of the knife is 59” inches, and there are 18 sections points are centered @ 3” inches.
Not counting the end shoe, there are 26 pointed guards which are bolted on in pairs. I didn’t spot this before your post. 13 pairs 2 in each unit. They are centered @2” inches as you correctly spotted. I now after much frustration can send pics.
