Deluxe seat

Postby john2189 » Thu Aug 30, 2018 5:48 pm

Why is the seat offset to the left of the steering wheel? I shimmed it to the right about 1” not perfectly centered with the wheel,, but close. Didn’t notice if the pan seat is off entered or not.

So there'd be space for a smallish passenger?

Good question. Why is the seat on the right of a Cub? Most everything has to be done with your left hand. Southpaw's dream. Being right-handed, I find shifting etc awkward.

I suppose there is an obvious answer, but I've always wondered why offset tractors are always right side driver position, I'm a south paw, so it's ok by me, just curious.

Offset for easier plowing. Offset to the right for easier getting on and off for right hand and also exhaust, fuel flow, and most engine adjustments are on the left side. Less stuff to work around.

By the time the A came along, I think most manufacturers were building most (offset) equipment so the working business was on the right. (There were notable exceptions like Wood Brothers and AC.) With the implement on the right, it made sense to offset the drivetrain to the left and put the operator where he had better visibility of the implements.

Ok my question was why the seat is not in line with the steering wheel?

My son gives rides to my grandson.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

I’m thinking so you don’t have to lean over to the side of the steering wheel to see the plants your cultivating.

Try getting in and out of the deluxe seat on a LoBoy.

Add an 18” steering wheel to the equation and things get even tighter. BTW I’m 6’4”. That doesn’t help either.

I know the feeling. In 6ft 7 and one of mine is a 65 with a deluxe seat. It's comfy to sit but harder to get in and out of. The slightly longer steering shaft makes it a bit harder. I'm probably going to make it my mower tractor so I don't get on and off all the time like I do my gardening cubs.

The standard pan seat on a Farmall is to the right of the steering wheel. I'm guessing, but it was probably kept as far to the right as practical to improve the view under the tractor for cultivating. The same seat on a Lo-Boy is to the left of the steering wheel, much closer to the center of the tractor. The right offset for cultivating didn't apply and closer to the center was probably better for some other uses. The placement of the deluxe seat is the same for both tractors. They probably didn't want the right side to be sticking out any more than the pan seat did. It was wide enough to allow seating in the approximate location of either pan seats. The average butt in 1958 was narrow enough to allow some sideways movement on the seat.
