Flail mower belt pulley question
Can someone please tell me the proper fastener to use to mount the belt pulley on the PTO shaft? It appears to be a 3/16" hole maybe? Shear pin or...?

Ok, thanks. Now here I thought it would be something a little more sophisticated than that.

OK, a long cotter pin.
There's no shear possible since you have splines. It's just there to keep it from walking up or down the shaft. Can't go to far forward, but it can go real far backwards.

Re: Flail mower belt pulley question
The cotter pin is just a locator, the pulley is supposed to be held in place with the bolt that pulls the clamp tight.

you are part of the problem!!!

I always bolted the pulley to the shaft on my Mott.John *.?-!.* cub owner wrote:The cotter pin is just a locator, the pulley is supposed to be held in place with the bolt that pulls the clamp tight.

Re: Flail mower belt pulley question
I don't have a bolt or clamp, didn't come with it and didn't know it was supposed to be there.

How about posting a photo of your pulley?

Fair enough, I will do so in the near future. As I have stated before, when I try to post pics, it says File too large, and some have suggested I use an app to reduce pic size. Which, isn't nearly as convenient as choosing "Share".

You can always dumb down your camera so it takes a lower resolution picture. Especially if you are setting out to take one to put on the forum.

Here are photos of Scott's mower. It's clearly a Mott mower. My opinion is that the drive pully is incorrect.

Re: Flail mower belt pulley question
I agree. Looks to me like it is a pulley off of something with a smooth shaft. Without grooves for the splines to fit into the only thing applying rotational force is the cotter key which isn't going to last long. The pictures makes the original question a whole bunch clearer now.Don McCombs wrote:Here are photos of Scott's mower. It's clearly a Mott mower. Re: Flail mower belt pulley question
If there are splines in the pulley there was one made for the 154 Loboy that looked similar. If you want to use that pulley you could tap the holes for set screws and double up on them so they don’t back out. Not the best fix. A ten spline pulley I believe 31/32 diameter shaft size would be best with tapered hub to lock in place like the Woods mowers used. Not sure what pulley diameter should be.

So I believe a Woods 42" mower pulley would be very close, I'm thinking they are at least 7", maybe slightly bigger.
