Postby greg49 » Thu Jan 24, 2008 4:21 pm

Hi All,

What is everyone doing to bring the rear tire rims back to looking presentable? Are they sandblasting them and painting them? If so who makes the most durable paint and the best original match? What are the other options? Any input is appreciated.

Sandblast and paint is probably the most common course of action. Virtually any silver paint will do. Check out the paint chart on Rudi's site. Another option is powder coating. Either run a search for powder coating or check rudi's site under other services.

If you send them to the guy that did Video Doc's make sure you have them shipped back via Cub Express so half the forum can try them on their Cubs first. Right Kodiak?
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Hey Greg,

My father has alot of stuff powder coated in Providence and I was surprised at how cheap. He doesn't have tractors (his days on the farm are over) but he does do alot of speciality manufacturing. I get you some names and numbers for powder coating right up I-95 in the capital city.

Greg,
I sent mine to R & B Powder Coating in Illinois. This is the same place that VideoDoc (John P) had his done.
Rear Rims only, sandblasted, zinc phosphate primer, silver powder, & clear coat came to $50 in May 2006. Shipping each way via FedEx Ground was $50. So for $150 this is what I got;

They seem to be holding up well.
The only concern with powder coating is that when, not if, I get a ding-nick-chip in them I will have to use whatever I can find that is a close match to the silver that R & B uses.
I had hoped to use a gray to match the original but they didn't have anything close.

Hope this helps.

That's right Barnyard and I think everyone liked them too :D
I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.

They were originally galvanized. I mention this because you have expressed an interest in detailed correct restorations. To galvanize locally, try a place that makes guardrails. Rhode Island has a lot of plating expertise and while that comes from the jewelry industry, the state has been "friendly" to plating operations so you may have some commercial galvanizing houses there. There is one nearby me in Glastonbury CT but I have never talked to them about plating rims.

Bob,
Not all years were galvanized. My '57 had a gray paint on them. The inside of the rims were in very good condition other than around the valve stem. Jim Becker can probably offer some insight on this.

Dave,
R & B did not do anything with the pitting. I did not ask nor did they. VideoDoc might be able to answer that better.

I'm not much of a painter but I just used a wire wheel on my grinder and then sprayed my rims with Krylon "Hammered Finish" paint. The hammered finish seems to cover up the imperfections because the whole paint job looks like it's been tapped with a ball pein hammer. I did the same to the rims on my H and they seem to hold up. Just my 2 cents. Greg

Krylon "Hammered Finish" is also what I painted mine with. To make the finish look "hammered" you gotta put a heavy coat on and it fills quite a few pits. Grump

Thank you everyone for your replies. I will now start exploring my options.I now have enough of an education to make an informed decision, which is what makes this forum such a valuable resource.I'll let all know how things turn out. I am still in the middle stages of this restoration, but with all of the help and support from the forum, it is progressing more quickly and easily than expected. Thanks,

R&B does not fill any pits as it would not more than likely survive the ovens. The powder does end up filling in most of the pits anyway though. i am very happy with the final project, just got my second set back from them, and will be taking another set over soon.
