1957 FCub Lowboy

Postby Ken (48 Cub) » Tue Jul 05, 2016 9:18 am

I had to beat the rear wheels off with a sledge to replace them, rusted out. I thought I would change the oil in the finals while I had easy access to them...how do I do this without making a huge mess? I can pull the oil pans to drain but how would I get the oil back in it?

I filled the pans to their stated capacity then lifted back up and bolted in place. I believe there is a fill plug located on the inboard side of each final, but never bothered to look for mine.

The fill plug on a Lo-Boy is on the rear of the final. I, too, fill the pan first on my F Cubs but you can't do it on a Lo-Boy due to the vertical orientation.

Hi,
Yes, you remove the pans to drain the oil from the final drives. Putting an oil drain pan under it catches the old oil.
Here is a picture of the LoBoy final drive filler plug from TM Tractor. It's not turned in the normal position when it's on the tractor, but it shows it's on the rear side, it can be seen from the rear of the tractor. You fill it up to the level of the hole, the owner's manual says.
Here are pages from the 1957 LoBoy owner's manual telling about changing the oil. It is numbers 30 and 31 in the pic. Lots of other lubing info in the manual too.
The plastic bottles of 80W-90 gear oil with the pointed end would work good to fill it probably. :)
