"What to do with a Cub you just brought home" question...

Postby txcublover » Mon Nov 20, 2017 9:17 am

I don't want this question to be pinned at the top, so I'm adding a new one that will hopefully fade with time. I've read through this thread and tried to update it as best I can based on the discussion that follows the main list. I plan to develop a webpage that includes this list (with attribution, as best I can) and include videos as I go through each of these steps on my cub. I would like to collaborate with some of the more experienced folks on this page (use one or more of you to say "take that off the list", "Oh gosh, don't ever do that again", or "you forgot X"). Any takers? So far, I've got this as my running task list (don't have everyone referenced yet, my apologies for that):

Air Cleaner
    - Empty Air Cleaner Oil Cup
    - Clean the entire air cleaner and tube and orifice
    - Ensure a good connection between the metal tube and the rubber tubes (replace rubber tubes as necessary)
    - Refill Air Cleaner Oil Cup
Engine Cooling
    - Drain Radiator
    - Flush radiator and engine with water
o Note: “When you pull the lower water manifold. Flush the inside of the block's water jacket and the lower radiator housing- you want to remove any buildup around the bottom of the cylinders.” (Eugene, farmallcub.com)
    - Add 50/50 radiator fluid (pre-mixed)
Lubrication
    - Grease all zerks
    - Lubricate the fan
    - Engine
      - Drain Oil
      - Flush Engine
      - Replace Oil Filter (say something here about paper gasket, reuse, etc.)
      - Replace with fresh oil
    - Transmission
      - Drain Transmission
      - Re-fill with kerosene
      - Drive cub around in low gear
      - Flush kerosene
      - Replace with tranny fluid (should this instead say "Replace with 80/90 gear oil or hi Tran fluid"?) and be sure not to overfill, as condensation can cause more liquid to come out than should be re-added. (k hutchins, farmallcub.com)
    - Steering Box
      - Drain Steering Box
      - Re-fill with kerosene (should this be removed? A PM from a very senior member says there isn't enough movement in the steering box for this to do anything. It is included due to a comment in the original thread, but if it serves no real purpose, I can remove it. What should be done if the lubrication in the steering box is gunked up?)
      - Now what? Assume I need to drive around and turn the thing a few times, though that isn't explicitly stated...
      - Replace oil in steering box
    - Front Wheels
      - Remove front wheels
      - Fix dents in rims (not lubrication, but do this first)
      - Inspect and replace/repack front wheel bearings
    - Finals
      - Remove the pans from the finals
      - Clean the pan for the finals
      - Reinstall the pans
      - Refill with grease. (instead of grease, should this be 90 wt gear oil?)
Electrical
    - Before 1964, the Cub was 6V positive ground. Starting with serial number 224401, Cubs are 12 volts, negative ground. It is not uncommon for older Cubs to have been converted to 12V negative ground. (More on determining whether your cub has been converted later)
    - Replace spark plugs
    - Remove and fully charge battery
    - Clean posts/grounds
    - Dress and regap or replace and gap points. If the points have been burned, they should be replaced and not just dressed and regapped. New points can be purchased from TM Tractor Parts (a sponsor for farmallcub.com).
    - Check ignition timing and mechanical advance operation
    - Degrease (keep any high pressure spray away from ignition components)
    - Lubricate mechanical advance pivot
Mechanical
    - Spray every nut and bolt with PB Blaster
    - Check and set the tappet clearance on the valves.
    - Check the fan and generator/alternator belts
    - Adjust the brakes
    - Adjust the clutch
Fuel
    - Drain fuel in tank
    - Scrub fuel tank
    - Clean fuel bowl (replace screen & gasket)

The only thing I would edit so far would be under transmission. Refill with 80/90 gear oil or hi Tran fluid. Not just transmission fluid. You may also mention, not to over fill, as more may come out due to condensation than should go back in.
You also didn't mention priming the oil pump under engine lube.

Not criticising, just suggestions.

You may also want to mention downloading the appropriate manual and reading it before they get too far over their head.

Great idea to update and keep current, thanks for taking on the task.

Under lubrication you need to add "replace oil filter". (if your changing oil the filter needs to be changed too, no telling how long it's been in there.)
Under finals you need to change "refill with grease" to refill with "90 wt. gear oil". (don't put grease in the pans before reinstall, there's a gasket on the pan and a plug in the side of the final to refill with gear oil.)
Every home is a school, what are you teaching?

I believe I incorporated this information into the original post, thanks. I don't have an opinion on tranny fluid, gear oil, or hi tran fluid, so I simply updated it to ask which should be stated (almost everything here is copied from the original post or comments attached to it). As for worrying about whether I would take this as criticism, unless someone personally attacks me I will take everything as constructive criticism, so no need to be too cautious...

Thank you, added this as at least a question -- I haven't messed with finals yet, so the wording will almost certainly need to be adjusted.

Under mechanical, could add adjust clutch, and brakes.

I'm thinking there should be a phased approach here (and I may be combining phase 1 and 2 already). I believe the original *unspoken* intent of this list was to answer the "What are the things that need to be done when one brings the cub home so they can safely operate it without causing mechanical damage to the tractor?" There were portions in comments that suggested checking compression, etc. which are obviously phase 2 things, where does adjusting the clutch and brakes fall in your opinion? I'm happy to add, just asking the question before I do.

I believe brakes are an important item. I am not saying rebuild brakes, just make sure what brakes you have work.
Adjusting clutch pedal free play might let you know if there are any other issues with the clutch, throwout bearing, or linkage.

Hi,

IH printed all the maintenance information in the Cub owner's manuals. Everyone with a Cub should read it.
Below is the Lubrication Guide pic from the 1950 Cub owner's manual, it shows all the places that need lubing. The info on the following pages there tells how to service the numbers in the pic.

Below is a newer Lubrication Guide pic from the 1965 Cub owner's manual.

http://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.clea ... age-65.jpg

The manuals are at the top left of the page at Quick links.

The links that you posted above don't work.

I guess you can't edit a post after X days, else after X days of idle time - I was hoping to keep it up to date as people added comments or PM'ed me -- so if there is any way to make this editable again, I would appreciate it. In the mean time, I downloaded the service manual from this site, optimized it (it's now about 43MB instead of 140MB), and added tons of bookmarks to make it easier to navigate if you use bookmarks in Acrobat Reader. Check it out here (and feel free to pull it back over to farmallcub.com if it would help at all):

I decided to pull this back to a personal notes page so I could continue to edit it, I will bring it back when it is more complete.

Hi,
I hadn't looked at txcublover's list, that I remember. I see 2 items I don't think are accurate.

"Air Cleaner
2. Engine Oil to refill the air cleaner cup (1/2 pint for a Donaldson Type, 3/8 pint for United Type) [Operators Manual pg 21].
(Note: if you don't have a glass jar on the air breather, you have the United Type)"

Hardly any Cubs I have seen, or seen on here in pics have a glass jar on the air cleaner intake cap.
I think it has been discussed in the past, the intake cap with the glass jar is not shown in the Cub parts manual.

"Engine Cooling
Parts that may need to be purchased:
Three (3) gallons of Antifreeze (capacity of the system is 9.75 quarts, or just under 2.5 gallons, per the Operators Manual, page 30)."

If you are buying regular straight antifreeze, you only need 2 gallons, to make a 50/50 mix with water.
He says later in the Engine Cooling info, to not use straight antifreeze.
